Run CrashPlan PRO with VMware 3.5

Overview

It is necessary to run vmfstools -i to import the image into a format ESX uses. Using VMWare 3.5 requires some modifications. See “Migrating VMware Workstation and VMware GSX Server Virtual Machines”:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_301_201_server_config.pdf

How It Works

In ESX server:

  • Create a new machine to use with CrashPlan. Choose custom and do not add a hard drive.
  • Copy the CrashPlan VMware image to the folder for the new machine.
    vmkfstools -i CrashPlanPROServer_2007-11-14.vmdk
    crashplanservername.vmdk
  • Add a new hard drive to the machine and specify the vmdk file created above.
