In CrashPlan PRO, version retention means keeping more of your recent versions of your backed up files and less of the older ones. Administrators have the option change the default version settings, including the ability to keep all versions of all files forever.
Specifying the versions to retain involves:
Choosing a backup frequency
Specify versions to retain for each interval
(optional) Pruning (Compact) unnecessary files from the backup archive
Specifying when CrashPlan compacts the backup archive
CrashPlan retains the newest version in several intervals:
the last week
the last 90 days
the last year
previous years
The following example displays the default retention settings for each interval in PRO Server:
In this example, CrashPlan PRO will retain the most recent file backed up each day in the last week, plus the most recent file backed up each day for the last 90 ninety days (that is, in addition to last weeks' files), plus one version per week for the last year, plus one version per month for the years prior to last year.
In another example, if you choose to retain two versions per week CrashPlan PRO will retain the most recent version backed up at the end of the week, plus the most recent version backed up 3 and a half days earlier, in essence splitting the difference.
As you reduce the number of versions to retain, CrashPlan PRO constrains the number of versions you can retain in the other intervals. In other words, if you choose to retain versions once per day in the last week, you can not specify a twice per day frequency for the 90-day setting. CrashPlan PRO resets any settings out the range after you click Save.
