Managing Default User Settings

Overview

By default, organizations inherit their default user settings (encryption key policy and destinations) from their parent organization. Top-level organizations inherit the default settings of the server, which is to back up only to the server itself.

Inheritance becomes an issue when you decide to establish default user settings, including specifying encryption key policies and multiple PRO Server as a backup destinations by targeting PRO Client(s) as destinations.

Default Encryption Key Policy

The default encryption key policy is the encryption key policy that is in effect by default to all new users. Use the Default User Settings command to change the default encryption key policy. To change the policy, you will need to disable inheritance so that you can define the new policy for this organization and any child orgs.

Clear the Inherit Policy check box to view your encryption key policy options.

Default Backup Destinations

To define other backup destinations, use the Default User Settings command to disable inheritance. When you disable inheritance you are declaring that this organization will define Default Backup Destinations for itself and any child orgs. You have the option to apply these changes to the all users (new and existing) or only to new users.

The default server settings do not allow peer-to-peer backups between clients, so as the server admin you must explicitly enable peer-to-peer backups as desired.

An Organization has a list of backup destinations that new clients are automatically granted permission to use. As part of managing this list you can add/remove destinations for both new clients and existing clients belonging to this org or any of its child orgs.

Other Default Options

Option Effect May Delete Backup Archives
Auto Start Indicates whether or not the clients granted this destination will automatically start backing up immediately No
Apply to Existing Indicates whether or not changes should apply to all computers in this org (and possibly child orgs) -
Stop Backups Indicates whether or not backups running to this destination without canceling permission to use the destination Yes
Remove Removes the destination from the list Yes

Considerations

Removing an active destination from existing computers will IMMEDIATELY remove all backup archives stored at that destination as soon as you click Save. You will not see a confirmation massage.

When you attempt to remove destinations AND apply that change to existing users, warnings appear in the Web Administration Console.
