PRO Server FAQ: Networking

Do I have to connect to your servers to use CrashPlan PRO?

No. CrashPlan PRO is completely standalone if you're not using one of our hosted services.

Do you have access to my standalone PRO Server?

No.

Do client computers need a static IP address?

No.

Can I limit how much bandwidth users consume?

Yes. You can limit users' allowed outbound bandwidth.

Is client / server communication client push or server pull architecture?

CrashPlan PRO uses a client push architecture.

Can I configure which IP address my PRO Server listens on?

No. PRO Server listens on all IP addresses configured for your server and there is no way to edit this setting.

Does my server need a static IP address?

Your CrashPlan PRO environment needs a consistent IP address or hostname in order to work. We recommend using either a static IP address or a DNS name for your PRO Servers.

Can clients reach my PRO Server from both a LAN and a WAN?

You can set just one PRO Server address for each client, but you can still take advantage of Local Area Network (LAN) speeds when the client is on the local network, without sacrificing the ability to back up when out on the road.

To get fast LAN speeds while in the office yet still be able to backup when out of the office you'll need a domain name service (DNS) on your LAN. Configure the client to back up to the public domain name name of the PRO Server (e.g. backup.acme.com) Then on the local network you would override that public domain name with the local IP address so that when the client is on the LAN its traffic doesn't have to go out to the internet and back again.
