CrashPlan PRO Server has Multi-Server support, which makes adding capacity and remote backup destinations easy and cost-effective.
With Multi-Server support, you can easily manage multiple PRO Servers for greater storage capacity, remote backup destinations and redundant backup archives. In a Multi-Server configuration, your primary PRO Server is known as the master. Additional PRO Servers that rely on the master are called slaves. You can create as many slaves from a PRO Server as you wish.
Each server in a Multi-Server environment is an independent backup destination. Should an archive become corrupted (e.g., corruption due to hard disk failure), this configuration preserves the integrity of the archive at other PRO Server destinations.
Note:
Multi-Server support provides many flexible configurations that result in better backup for your organization. Examples include:
| Master | Slave |
|---|---|
| Performs all new user authorization and creation | Depends on user authorization provided by the master. Slave does not have “failover” capabilities. |
| Handles all business-level reporting and alerts | Handles system alerts, such low disk space |
| Knows about all users | Knows only about users backing up to itself |
| Knows about backups to all destinations | Knows only about backups to itself |
| Enables web restore capabilities | Provides web restore capabilities only for users backing up to the slave |
| Does LDAP lookups | Does LDAP lookups independent of the master even if the master is down |
A PRO Server master maintains the authoritative database for licensing and authentication of all PRO Client seats.
PRO Server slaves rely on the master for licensing and authentication information. They use advanced data caching and synchronization for fast backup service to PRO Clients connected to them.
Multi-Server support is a powerful feature that enables a number of backup scenarios. Here are some real-world examples.
