Inheritance: Settings and Destinations

Overview

The concept of “inheritance” in CrashPlan PRO means that certain settings, including security keys, default destination and default client settings are passed down by default to the organizations on that server. In turn, these organization-level settings are passed down from the parent organization to child organizations. Inheritance enables the administrator to efficiently pass down this information from the server level down to organizations, child organizations through to individual users and their computers.

Inheritance is enabled by default. However, you will need to turn off inheritance when you want to upgrade security settings or when you want to add or change default backup destinations. When you turn off inheritance to make these changes, you have the option of applying these changes only to new users as well as to existing users.

Understanding inheritance is critical when making changes that effect existing users' ability to restore their backup data.

Inheritance settings for an organization are configured under:

Considerations

  • Turn off inheritance when:
    • upgrading security settings or changing default backup destinations (Default User Settings).
    • changing LDAP, usernames / email addresses, admin alerts, and alerts and reports options (Edit Org)
IMPORTANT: Whenever you turn off inheritance to make changes that affect existing users' ability to access backup data (such as upgrading user security or removing a backup destination), it results in making it impossible for those users to restore their previously backed up files. In these situations, CrashPlan PRO will warn you of the consequences of your changes and require that you confirm the operation.

Benefits

The inheritance capability in CrashPlan PRO provides the following benefits:

  • Efficiently pass down global settings and configuration information from the server level down to organizations, individuals, and their computers
  • Effectively manage the impact of changes on new and existing users
