PRO Client FAQ: General

How is my backup stored?

Data is de-duplicated at the block level, compressed and encrypted before it leaves the source computer. This de-duplicated, compressed and encrypted data is then sent to the backup destination and stored within files of up to 4 GB in size. Each source computer has its own folder at the destination containing its own backup data. The data stored on the destination is not human readable and can only be viewed via the CrashPlan PRO software.

What happens when I push the Compact button?

An Archive Maintenance job is submitted on the server. Archive maintenance is the process in which space in the backup archive is reclaimed by immediately applying file selection or retention policy changes (such as how many versions to keep and how long to keep deleted files).

Will CrashPlan continue to run when I am logged out or logged in as a different user?

If you are using a Windows computer, CrashPlan will always continue to back up because it runs as a background service.

If you are using a Macintosh computer, CrashPlan will always continue to back up unless it was specifically installed as “Run as User”.

How do I update the client software?

Updates are automatic following a server upgrade. Make sure the proper upgrade port is open. Port info is here.

Can I issue the client manual commands?

Yes. Double-click the CrashPlan PRO logo in the upper-right corner to open the command-line text box at the bottom of the UI. Commands should be entered without quotes and can be comma-separated to issue more than one at once. A list of commands can be found here.

What is this "Cairo" error on my Linux or Solaris client?

This error indicates that the Cairo graphics library is not installed or not available on this system. Cairo is required by the client user interface and must be installed.

Go to our How To section for instructions on resolving this dependency.

Why is my floppy disk drive light blinking?

This is because of a known issue within Windows when a program uses VSS to access an open file. More information is here.

Can I reassign a client to another user?

From PRO Client use the manual deauthorize command.

Otherwise you can do it from the admin console when the computer is connected. In PRO Server, navigate to the page for that computer and from the navigation menu, click on Deauthorize.

When the new user logs in the client will receive a new GUID and get a fresh set of settings.
